Why do we need Vitamin C?
Vitamin C protects our cells and helps them stay healthy. Specifically, it plays a role in helping wounds heal, and aids the maintenance of healthy skin, blood vessels, bones and cartilage.
Where can we get Vitamin C from?
Vitamin C can be sourced from many items. Some of these include oranges, grapefruit, guava, kiwi, red and green peppers, strawberries, blackcurrants, kale, broccoli, and brussels sprouts.
How much Vitamin C do we need?
Adults between the ages of 19 and 65 need 40mg per day.
Vitamin C isn’t stored in the body, so we need to consume some on a daily basis.
What happens if we consume too much Vitamin C?
Too much Vitamin C i.e. only if it's in excess of 1,000mg per day, can result in stomach pain, diarrhoea and flatulence.
What does the Department of Health have to say about Vitamin C?
“You should be able to get all the vitamin C you need by eating a varied and balanced diet. If you take vitamin C supplements, don't take too much as this could be harmful. Taking less than 1,000mg of vitamin C supplements a day is unlikely to cause any harm.”
