Find out why Sandra became vegan and how her journey has been so far
I've been speaking with Sandra on Twitter for a few months now. She's compassionate, open, honest and, she's excited abut being vegan. I'd love to share her journey with you, especially because, she shifted to a vegan diet overnight. What she has shared, shows how easy it can be to be vegan, even when you're travelling.
How I became vegan
I consider myself a newish vegan having decided to make the change overnight in April 2014. A friend, who had been vegetarian for 30 years, decided to go vegan, and as we were going on holiday together in the August, I said I'd try it to. That was the beginning of my vegan journey and along the way I realised the true meaning of becoming vegan. I realised that my choices would mean, no animals would suffer because anything I consumed or used.
My Achilles heel
I basically winged it at first. I learned as I went along, but I must tell you that, at first, my Achilles heel was soya milk. Apart from that, since becoming vegan, I haven't missed or craved fish, chicken or dairy products.
Vegan in North Wales
Recently I visited North Wales and emailed the Tynedale Hotel prior to arrival about my dietary requirements, (so as not to make a fuss on arrival).
I pleasantly surprised. The hotel manager and one of the chefs put together a vegan menu and had gone to the point of sourcing vegan cheese and "spending an hour in Holland & Barrett's asking for vegan advice"!!!
Tynedale Hotel go the extra mile
The menu was simple but tasty and I was impressed by the thought and effort that had gone into it. The choices ranges from from Pineapple fritters in a tempura like lemonade batter to wild mushroom and shallot potato cake, with an orange olive & chilli sauce (my favourite)!!
I have to admit though I've never been a lover of cream so I left the soya cream aside but totally devoured the poached strawberries.
My tips for being vegan on holiday
My best advice to vegans going on holiday is to simply email the hotel approximately a month in advance and see what happens. It might be a learning curve for you and the establishment you're staying in, but it's worth a try. I didn't expect the amazing service I received and hence, am so glad that I contacted them!
